Pine Knob Music Theatre History

Pine Knob Music Theatre officially opened its doors on June 25, 1972. Teen heartthrob David Cassidy held a matinee for the venue’s grand opening. Then, Andy Williams performed the first evening show two nights later. Pine Knob Music Theatre earned its fame upon opening because it was the biggest amphitheater in the United States at the time.

In 1990, Palace Sports & Entertainment bought Pine Knob Music Theatre for a whopping $8 million. The venue underwent major renovations that included video screens for pavilion attendees. In 2001, the new year brought a branding partnership with DTE Energy that resulted in Pine Knob Music Theatre changing its name to DTE Energy Music Theatre.

The venue staff would increase available refreshment options, add new sign designs, and install the Meyer MILO Line Array sound system in 2012. Pine Knob Music Theatre still uses this system today. When the two-decade branding deal ended in 2022, Pine Knob Music Theatre returned to its original, iconic venue name.

Special guests affectionately refer to venue attendees as Pine Knobbers during some performances.
